Norbert and Foot factor have made orthotics for Tour de France riders since 1991. We are watching the 110th edition of the Tour de France with interest and cheering on the pro riders wearing Foot factor insoles. The challenging course for the 2023 Tour is providing an exciting and surprising race so far.
Why do I need bespoke orthotics for cycling
Having an orthotic/insole fitted when you’re not fully weight bearing might seem a strange concept but foot biomechanics are very important for cycling.
The foot has to keep-up a near perfect alignment through-out the course if we don’t want the knee to bear the consequences of mal-alignment. Proper support for your feet can also prevent injury and create more comfort for you overall. Plus the foot-shoe-cleat-pedal interface has the greatest potential to gain or lose power than anywhere else on the bike. A foot stabilised into its optimal position can transfer more power giving the rider an advantage especially for explosive efforts like short power climbs.
Knee Biomechanical mal-alignment
The mis-alignment of the knee during the cycling leads to:
- Patellae mal-tracking
- Knee pain
- Besides the discomfort caused and potential for injury, performance is also impaired.
a good orthotic is the best way to transmit leg power to the pedals and the bike” Norbert, founder of Foot factor.”
