Foot tendonitis is inflammation in any of the tendons in your foot. The most common are the Achilles, peroneal, extensor and posterior tibial tendons.
Types of Foot Tendonitis
Achilles tendonitis: This is the most common form of tendonitis. The Achilles tendon is a strong, fibrous band of tissue located at the back of the lower leg, connecting the calf muscles to the heel bone. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon causes pain above the back of the heel, especially when stretching the ankle or standing on tiptoes.
Extensor tendonitis: Inflammation of the tendons that attach bones at the front of the leg to the toes which causes pain across the top of the foot.
Peroneal tendonitis: Inflammation in either of the two tendons that run along the outer ankle bone connecting to the midfoot and arch, causing pain around the back of the ankle or when turning the foot in or out.
Posterior tibial tendonitis: Inflammation of the tendon that connects the calf muscle to bones on the inside of the foot which helps hold up the arch of the foot. Causes pain around the instep/arch and the inside of the ankle. When left untreated, posterior tibial tendonitis can gradually bring on a problem called adult-acquired flatfoot deformity, which is a chronic and debilitating condition.
Older people are particularly vulnerable to tendonitis because tendons become weaker and lose elasticity over time. Older people who suffer from Achilles tendonitis are more prone to developing Achilles tear or a full rupture.
Bespoke orthotics offer a personalised and effective solution for managing tendonitis
By addressing underlying biomechanical issues and promoting optimal alignment, orthotics play a vital role in alleviating pain, facilitating healing, and enhancing the overall quality of life for individuals with tendonitis. It also reduces the risk of further damage which can lead to more serious conditions.
