Throughout a lifetime, the average person walks about 115,000 miles—roughly the equivalent of circling the globe four times! Yet, as we age, the wear and tear on our feet can lead to various challenges that affect mobility and quality of life. Fortunately, orthotics can alleviate these issues and help maintain foot health and function.

The Effects of Ageing on Feet

Ageing brings natural changes to the feet, and certain conditions become increasingly common as a result of lifelong use and biological shifts:

  1. Flattening Feet
Over time, the arches of the feet may gradually flatten, causing the foot to spread out and increase in size. Many find they go up a half or full shoe size as they age.
  2. Joint Pain and Stiffness
Like those in other parts of the body, the joints in the feet can become stiff and painful due to cartilage wear and tear. This is often accompanied by swelling and reduced mobility.
  3. Arthritis
Arthritis, particularly osteoarthritis, is common in older adults and can significantly affect the small joints of the feet, leading to pain and difficulty walking.
  4. Bunions and Corns
Bunions (bony bumps at the base of the big toe) and corns (thickened skin caused by friction) are frequent problems. Both can cause discomfort and interfere with wearing certain types of footwear.
  5. Reduced Circulation
Poor blood flow, often due to conditions like diabetes or vascular disease, can lead to cold feet, numbness, and slower healing of any foot injuries.

The Role of Orthotics

Maintaining foot health is crucial for mobility, independence, and overall well-being. The right strategies can address common conditions and make a significant difference.

We offer two levels of orthotics — fully Bespoke Orthotics or Custom Insoles. Fully Bespoke Orthotics are best for those who have significant foot problems like flat feet, severe pronation, heel pain, arthritis or other complex foot conditions that require precise support and correction. Custom Insoles offer excellent support, cushioning and shock absorption at a lower cost.

Benefits of Bespoke Orthotics or Custom Insoles for Ageing Feet

  1. Support and Alignment
Orthotics help align the feet, improving balance and stability. This can reduce the risk of falls, which are a major concern for older adults.
  2. Cushioning for Comfort
As the natural padding in the feet diminishes with age, orthotics with cushioned insoles can reduce pain and fatigue, especially during prolonged standing or walking.
  3. Shock Absorption
The springiness of the feet declines with age, but orthotics can provide shock absorption to lessen the impact on joints and bones, reducing pain and preserving mobility.
  4. Accommodating Bunions and Bone Spurs
Custom orthotics can be tailored to relieve pressure on sensitive areas caused by bunions, corns, or bone spurs, ensuring greater comfort in daily activities.

Ageing may bring changes to our feet, but with the right care and support, it is possible to stay active and comfortable. Orthotics can play a crucial role in addressing the unique challenges that come with ageing feet, improving both mobility and quality of life. By taking proactive steps and prioritising foot health, you can ensure that your golden years are filled with movement and vitality.
